The Alexander Technique is a method that teaches a person how to improve the way they use themselves in their daily life through gentle manipulation and verbal instruction for the benefit of their health and well-being and in order to avoid injury.
People from all walks of life, in greatly varying degrees of health and illness, choose to study Alexander Technique for different reasons, but typically people choose to take lessons because they are suffering from some sort of pain or chellenge.
Few adults live free of pain and stiffness. Perhaps you suffer from a bad back or knee, sore shoulders, or a form of repetitive strain injury resulting from playing a musical instrument, typing for long hours, or any other activity. Perhaps you have recurring headaches or hoarseness. The list can go on and on...
Whether your pain or condition is caused by injury, genetics, stress, or any other reason, it is probably also aggravated by sub-conscious habits. These fundamental habits of thought, movement, and posture are addressed in an AT lesson, providing the student with the ability to recognize harmful habits, and substitute them with a healthier pattern of use.
Personally, I started taking lessons because of a sore back – a result of practicing piano for long hours during my teens. Apart from helping my back, to my surprise I found that lessons also improved my breathing, and the chronic cold that I suffered from as a child gradually went away.
F.M. Alexander himself developed the technique in order to avoid losing his voice while performing, but ended up helping people overcome stuttering, improve their golf game, and with many other seemingly unrelated problems.
I have personally found that the Alexander Technique provides fascinating and surprising insight into the way our bodies and minds interact, while achieving a powerful feeling of well-being and happiness. I offer private 45 minute lessons in the Alexander Technique. Please contact me for more information and to book lessons.
